Ceramic Vs Vitrified tiles:

Ceramic tiles are made from clay, whereas vitrified are made from clay with added minerals like quartz, silica etc. to impart better strength.

  • Normally they cannot be identified from the glazed surface. However, they are easily identifiable from the base. Clay tiles have a brown coloured base and doesn’t look like a stone. Vitrified tiles usually have the same colour pattern throughout as is on the surface. However, their surface is glossy.
  • Vitrified tiles can also be identified from size. They are available in sizes usually 2 ft X2 ft or more, while ceramic tiles are available in sizes usually smaller than 2 ft X2 ft.
  • Ceramic tiles cannot resist heavy loads such as furniture, while vitrified tiles are strong enough to withstand a lot of weight.
  • Vitrified tiles have very less (0.5%) water absorption, whereas in case of ceramic tiles it is around 3% to 7%
  • Bigger the tile, higher will be the thickness

Besides Vitrified and Ceramic, other types of are flooring are Vinyl floor tiles, Marble Tiles, Wood floor tiles etc.

Tiling process

The base concrete or the RCC slab on which the tiles are to be laid should be cleaned, wet and mopped. The surface for tiling should be with a cement mortar of ratio 1:4 (1 cement: 4 coarse sand) or as specified by the manufacturer. The average thickness of the surface should be 20 mm, while the thickness of any portion of the tiles should not be less than 10 mm.

Mortar should be spread, tamped and corrected to proper levels and allowed to harden sufficiently. This helps in acting as a fairly rigid cushion for the tiles to be set and enables the mason to place wooden planks across to work on.

Over this mortar surface, neat grey cement slurry of honey-like consistency should be spread in quantities of 3.3 kg cement per square metre.  Tiles should be soaked in water, washed clean and fixed in this grout one after another. Each tile should be tapped gently with a wooden mallet till it is properly laid in level with the adjoining tiles. The joints should be kept as thin as possible, in straight lines, or to suit the required pattern.

The joints should be cleaned off the grey cement slurry with wire/coir brush or trowel to a depth of 2 mm ‒ 3 mm. All the dust and loose mortar should be removed. Joints should be flush pointed with white cement mixed with pigment to match the colour of tiles. The floor should then be kept wet for 7 days. After curing, the surface should be washed and finished clean. The finished floor should not sound hollow when tapped with a wooden mallet.
