Wall Plastering

The Mortar:

The cement sand mortar for wall plastering is usually mixed in the ratio of 1:6 (cement: sand) or 1:5 or 1:4, and 1:3 for roof or ceiling. The sand used here should neither be too fine nor too coarse.

Plastering should be started from the top and worked down towards the floor. Ceiling plaster should be completed before commencement of wall plaster. To ensure even thickness and a true surface, the plaster with a thickness of 15 × 15 cm should be applied, horizontally and vertically, at not more than 2 metres intervals over the entire surface. The surfaces of these gauged areas should be truly in the plane of the finished plaster surface.

Preparation of Surface:

The joints of the brick masonry should be raked to a minimum depth of 10 mm and surface cleaned and damped evenly. Before the plastering is commenced, all junctions of masonry wall & RCC columns/beams/slabs etc. should be reinforced with galvanised chicken mesh. The mesh should be 300 mm wide, plugged, nailed or stapled as required at intervals not exceeding 450 mm on either side.

Curing:

As soon as plaster is hard, curing must start and plaster must be kept wet for at least 10 days. During this period, it should not be left exposed to the sun and should be protected by hanging wet gunny bags. Dates of plastering should be marked on various sections of the wall for the guidance of curing work.

After plastering the wall is painted. See Painting a cemented wall.

Defective Plaster:

Cracks in the plaster or any part which sounds hollow when tapped, or soft, or not in line-level, should be cut out in a rectangular shape and re-plastered.
